2016 SUMMER PROGRAM: EXPEDITION BAJA, MEXICO

This summer the Creation District will take our thirst for social justice and change overseas to Baja Mexico for a week of life altering engagement and creation. Lace up your boots and dust off your passport for seven days of hiking epic volcanoes, surfing and swimming in breathtaking oceans, laughing with little ones as they take you on a tour of their home orphanage, and climbing to the top of a vista point at sunset. On top of all of this daring adventure, meet one struggling family and work alongside them to build a house from the ground up. Yes—in one week we turn a pile of wood, nails, shingles, paint, and rafters into a beautiful family home. Throughout the week we will also engage in leadership lessons, skill building, self discovery, and a chance to gain a deeper understanding of your place in relation to the world around you.

From Tuesday July 12th to Thursday July 14th, we will meet at the Creation District to prepare for our journey by learning about social problems in Mexico and how they relate to the issues of poverty and homelessness in America. We will come to understand Mexican politics, culture, and history. We will discuss what it means to participate in immersion trips and how we can turn “community service” into “community engagement." We will humble ourselves and open our hearts and minds to learn from those we meet on our journey instead of trying to simply “teach” them our ways. We will explore, we will listen, we will create, we will engage, and we will build community all before we take off the following Sunday.

On Sunday July 17th, we will drive our way through the vast beauty of California and into the rich culture of Mexico, ultimately entering the small city of Vicente Guerrero about 200 miles south of the U.S. border. Once there, we will put what we have learned about these deep rooted social problems into practice by building real relationships with local residents, exploring the city markets as well as wilderness adventures, and return home with fresh eyes and enriched spirits on July 23rd.

For this trip, we will be partnering with StudentReach, a local non-profit that works to empower students through their innovative coaching program and international travel work. They have experience taking over 5000 people on trips to dozens of countries all over the world and bring an expert perspective to international travel and community engagement.

Join us this summer for the epic adventure of a lifetime!
